October 9th

Today we visited the infamous prison Bautzen II. The prison was first used as a normal prison but later on it was used as a prison for political prisoners. Anyone who was suspected of being a spy, talked about things they shouldn't have or tried to escape to west-Germany. Luckily for us the prison was not too far from the school. The prison was shaped like a T.

The different workshops were in the front of the prison while the cells were in the back. There were 3 different types of cells. The normal cell, isolation cell and the cells for people who refused to work. A person had once escaped the prison by digging a hole in a wall but he was caught about a week after his escape. Relatives of the prisoners were allowed to meet them once every 3 months for 30 minutes. One of the most interesting things about the prison was its location. It was right next to a school and a courthouse. The windows in the courthouse would be blocked so that nobody would get to see the prisoners and the things the staff might've done to them.
The yard where the prisoners were allowed to roam 30 minutes per day (if the weather was good) was small and had the weirdest rule for the prisoners. You'd have to walk around in a marked area for 30 minutes. No talking,no contact with others, nothing. In my opinion the tour was good but the guide could've been better. Due to his not so great English he had to repeat himself several times.
